Client Information

Counselling sessions last for 1 hour, preferably once a week. Please arrive at the allocated time for your session. If you arrive early or late for your session, the sessions will still start and finish at the times agreed.

A regular commitment is required from both me as your counsellor and you as the client. However, I realise it is sometimes hard, but please try to give at least 24 hours notice if cancelling your appointment, shorter or non appearance will result in a charge, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Your first session is to go through a contract and to gain more of an understanding of your counselling, hypnotherapy and supervision needs. This session will also provide us with an opportunity to consider whether we wish to work together and at the end of your session you can decide whether to commit to more sessions, leave it there or you may go away and think about it for a few days.

All information is confidential and will not be discussed outside of the counselling room, except:

  • Where I am compelled to break confidentiality by a court of law. For example, disclosing information relating to Harm to Children, Terrorism, Money Laundering and Drug or Human Trafficking Offences.
  • Where information disclosed during the session is of such concern that confidentiality cannot reasonably be expected to be maintained. For example, If I have reason to believe that there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case I reserve the right to contact the appropriate authorities.

Any concerns will be discussed with you and I will keep you informed prior to any disclosures unless I consider that the urgency of the situation requires immediate action to safeguard the safety of yourself or others.

Like all counsellors, I receive regular supervision. During this I may discuss the things we talk about in order to ensure that as the counsellor I am working both therapeutically and to an ethical standard, but you will only be identified by your first name. My supervisor is an experienced counsellor/hypnotherapist and a qualified supervisor, bound by the same level of confidentiality. Both myself and my supervisor adhere to the National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP) Ethical Framework.

As all counsellors are required to keep appropriate records of our client work, I will make brief notes after each session. These notes are identified by your first name only and do not contain any other information that I collect from you. All information collected will be stored securely, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), and will be kept for 5 years in line with my insurance company and governing body policies and will be securely destroyed after this or upon my death.

You may end counselling at any time, but please try to give at least one-weeks’ notice of intending to finish, so that we can plan an appropriate ending. If at any time I feel I can no longer help you, I would discuss this with you so we can agree on the best way forward and if needed refer you to someone who can.

Sessions will not take place if you are under or appear to be under the influence of alcohol or substances, and any threatening, violent or inappropriate behaviour will result in termination of the counselling and hypnotherapy contract.
